6 MISTAKES THAT KILL YOUR DISABILITY APPLICATION
Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) is a very complicated and complex process that can be absolutely overwhelming. Even completing the application can be a challenge. Here are 6 mistakes that can wreck your application and result in denial:
- Failing to Fill Out the Forms—The Social
Security Administration (SSA) will send you a lot of forms to fill out.
It’s up to you to make sure that you fill out every part of those forms
correctly. Don’t forget: if a question doesn’t apply to you, put “not applicable” or “N/A” in the provided space. Do not leave anything blank.
- Incorrect Information—If the form asks you for your doctor and you put the wrong name down, then your case reviewer isn’t going to be able to confirm the medical diagnosis that proves you have a disability. Provide detailed contact information for every doctor or medical professional, right down to the zip code. Make sure you spell everything correctly and have the proper information for every question. And don't forget dates, which may be estimated if you don't have exact dates.
- Writing Illegibly—If your case reviewer can’t read your answers, then he/she can’t really say that you answered that question. Be sure the answers to questions are neat and preferably typed out or printed neatly.
- Missing the Deadline—You must reply to most forms sent by the SSA within 10 days. That gives you little time to answer everything. If you need more time, then you have to contact the SSA immediately and ask for an extension.
- Contradiction—If you say something in the first part of your application and then contradict yourself in a later section, the SSA may deny your disability application. Make sure you have your facts straight before you make conflicting statements. It may help to have someone proofread your application before you submit it.
- Rejecting Help—If you thought there were a lot of things on this list, then you would be amazed to find that even more can go wrong on your disability application. Seeking professional help from a disability attorney/advocate could really help you to get the benefits that you need. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if your case starts to overwhelm you. Most claimants find that they really need help in the appeals stage. Most claims today are won by an appeal, not just an application.
According to a study by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), 60 percent of claimants who use an attorney or advocate win their disability claims. But only 31 percent who don't use an attorney/advocate win. You probably qualify for a FREE consultation and will never have to pay a legal fee until after you get approved and collect your past due benefits. Most advocates or attorneys do not ask for money upfront to provide help.
